Feeling overwhelmed? Our election has been under national watch in part because of outgoing current Governor Susana Martinez and the opportunity for a potential Democratic shift with this election, and the tightly packed race for the Democratic ballot for US. House of Representatives District I (our district). Our goal for this piece is to make you feel less overwhelmed, and have some idea of what is going on in this Primary so that you can vote today, tomorrow, or June 5
What is a Primary Election?
A preliminary election where the candidates who will get to be on the ballot for each major party will be chosen.
Since a few of the major positions are unopposed in their respective party, we’ve just listed those for the sake of efficiency and relevance and will provide more details about their positions as we near close to the General Election in November. We’ll start by position in descending order:
U.S. Senator (2)
Current: Tom Udall (D) and Martin Heinrich (D)
Senator Terms are 6 years.
Tom Udall’s term extends until 2021, but Heinrich’s seat is up for re-election.
Democratic Primary Ballot:
Current Senator Martin Heinrich, unopposed
Republican Primary Ballot:
Mick Rich, also unopposed
U.S. House of Representatives (3)
Current: Michelle Lujan Grisham (D), Ben Ray Lujan (D), Steve Pearce (R)
House of Representative terms are 2 years.
All 3 seats are up for re-election.
